COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an introductory course in computers and information processing. Areas covered include computer terminology, computers in society, microcomputers and use of current microcomputer software, the input, processing and output of data and the hardware and software required, the systems development cycle and data communications concepts. As a result of taking this course, the student will have a broader understanding of computer hardware and software.

ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES:

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. describe computer system's components such as: hardware and software, types of computer programs, types of computer files, systems documentation, and batch control
  2. demonstrate knowledge of how to install programs
    o Leadership, Decision-making, and Teamwork by contributing toward the success of a group systems activity and demonstrating effective communication skills through use of e-mail and office computer software
    o Written/Oral Communication by participating in class discussions using acceptable and appropriate words, punctuation and grammar in all assignments and written documentation
    o Self-Initiative And Reliability by regular, punctual class attendance, contributing to the completion of assignments on time

EVALUATION OF COURSE OUTCOMES:
The course outcomes will be assessed through class participation, discussions, lab exercises, homework, quizes and exams. Discussions are to build upon and enhance concepts and skills covered in the reading assignments. In-Class lab exercises will apply these concepts and skills. We will attempt to have 2 hours each night to covering the material in lecture format, with the last 2 hours to apply these concepts in the lab.
